I’ve been very contemplative about Mother’s Day this year. I guess because It’s nearing the 10th anniversary of my mother’s death, and the 2nd Mother’s Day that Lonnie’s Mom, Lois, has not been with us. I wondered if Mother’s Day was one of those “holidays” inspired by Hallmark to sell cards? But after some research, here is what I found:
- Mother’s Day was inspired after the Civil War as a day intended to unite women against war.
- In 1858, an attempted movement to improve sanitation throughout the United States called ”A Mothers’ Work Day” was established. (Does not sound like fun for Moms…!)
- In 1907, a crusade to create a “Memorial Day for Woman” was started and thus, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, VA.
- In 1912, the Holiday was declared official in some states.
- In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national “Mother’s Day”, a day for Americans to show the flag in honor of mothers whose sons had died in the war.
Did you know? According to the National Restaurant Association, that Mother’s Day is the most popular day of year to dine out in a restaurant in the United States.
So those are my Mother’s Day tidbits for you. I know it’s cliche, but to me everyday is Mother’s Day (and Father’s Day for that matter). I have a wonderful child who honors, loves and respects me all 365 days throughout the year. I have a wonderful husband who loves and respects my mothering capabilities. I am truly blessed.
I know SO MANY wonderful moms and grandmoms and I hope that you all enjoy your special day.
What does Mother’s Day mean to you?
